I unexpectedly received a message from Dr. Ortiz, director of the Andrews University Master of Divinity Program. "Whenever you have a group of great and committed students as the ones you brought last time to Cuba, you are welcome to join us. We will be back in March."
Wow! Although we had sought out the mission trip to Cuba in 2017, Mike and I had decided that we would not ask Dr. Ortiz if we could return to Cuba with his group in 2018. Not wanting to push open a door, we felt we should just pray and let God guide. Although Dr. Ortiz was very happy with our 2017 group, he didn´t mention the possibility of going in 2018. Instead, God led us to take a group of students to... Hillsboro, right here in Oregon for our spring break mission! We worked with the Spanish SDA Church and Centro Cultural, a community service organization in a nearby town. Great things happened as we collaborated with the church youth group and made connections with several teens. The end result? Those students are enrolled at Portland Adventist Academy this year and the connection between the academy and the church has been strengthened.
Although it was a different kind of spring break mission, we clearly saw God leading. So we felt called again this year to just pray and wait to see where God would guide. We had told God that we would love to return to Cuba, so when the call came, we felt it was an open door. Now that that door has opened to go to Cuba in 2019, we are praying God will confirm the call by bringing together 6-8 students to go with us.
