Our mission statement says that we seek to be the hands of Jesus at home and abroad, but our work has focused on visits to Spanish-speaking countries and we have been week on the "at home" part.
This year we did not sense God calling us to take an international trip. Instead, we partnered with the Hillsboro Spanish SDA church and a local organization, Centro Cultural, to serve our local Spanish-speaking community. Because we were local, we allowed students to participate in any part of the project that they were able to. Some students picked up a day or two, others participated for the whole week.
We helped Centro Cultural prepare for "El Dia del Niño"--a special celebration for children and did outreach activities with the youth group at the HIllsboro church. We assisted at the church´s food bank and in church beautification.
Two highlights were bilingual Friday night worship with the youth group and door-to-door sharing sparkling cider and a message of encouragement with homes around the church. Perhaps the most important part of our experience was meeting teens at the church who later decided to attend Portland Adventist Academy.
