We had been praying for God to put together the group. Josué--the last member of Cuba 2017 who was still at PAA--was an instant teammate, but who else would join us? Jacob, whose brother Ryan was a Cuba 2017 teammate, and Keeley, both sophomores in Spanish II, quickly asked if they could join the team. Then Gam, who has the added plus of being bilingual, joined up. Keeley recruited her "adventure buddy" Morgan. That left us at five. And at five we stayed, week after week.
Mike and I had prayed specifically for a minimum of six students. We debated, much like Abraham with God. For the sake of one, would we really cancel this mission?
I knew it was time to make a firm commitment to the trip, so I asked Mike to pray with me before I went to school. There would be an announcement assembly that day. I wouldn´t plead for students to join, just make a simple announcement. Mike and I prayed that God would let us know for sure that He was calling us to Cuba 2019, and if He would send us a sixth student it would be a clear confirmation that we were to go.
At the announcement assembly four hours later, I simply said, "If you have spoken to me about Cuba--or even if you haven´t--please talk to me after announcements."
Damaris, another Spanish-speaking student, was the first to me at the door, saying, "Profe, I want to go to Cuba!"
And so there were six.
