Finally! The painting is done, thanks to everyone's hard work and our secret superpower... Arsenio. Arsenio was a professional painter prior to coming to Las Palmas as a house parent. After our first day of painting, we panicked a bit (adults panicked; students were blissfully unaware of what it would take to paint a house inside and out), because despite all our work scraping and preparing for painting, the paint roller pulled the old paint off patches of the ceiling. We asked Arsenio for advice and, once he got permission from the director, he painted with us every day, taking over the tricky ceiling work.
Students had to get into awkward places sometimes to get the job done, but it is done! Well, except that Arsenio is insisting on a second coat on a small piece of kitchen wall (behind cupboards that will be torn out, so a little unmotivating). Mike plans to tackle that on Sunday, but it will hopefully be a quick one-man job..
We have had time for fun as well: on the job because teenagers with a paintbrush are always going to end up painting each other, as well as the walls; at home playing games; and celebrating Sophia's 17th birthday on Wednesday.
With the painting job behind us, we are ready to jump into the Family Olympics events that just began today. Stay tuned!
